Summer Representative Sport

Touch Football

Unfortunately there was another weekend of washed out games, we are hopeful of getting some games for all teams across this weekend and next. There will be some changes to the Rhino for this week. These updates will be emailed to all Touch Football players tomorrow (Friday 4 March).

Basketball

Please check the Redlands Rhino for your fixture times this Saturday 5 March which will be the second to last round of the 2022 Basketball Season. The Girls program continues to thrive, winning 5 of the 7 contests in the Girls ISA competition over the weekend. The boys had some extremely close games across the board and managed to win 7 of their games on Saturday. We are looking forward to the last two rounds of the ISA Basketball competition as our teams are improving each week.

A reminder that there is 3×3 in Lang Gym on Monday after school and Monday/Wednesday morning skills training in Lang Gym for anyone looking for additional basketball opportunities, further details can be found in the training schedule on Redlands Pulse.

This weekend will see our students travel to Canberra for the ACT Head of the Lake and ACT Championships held across both Saturday and Sunday. This is a particular highlight for students, families and coaches alike. Please be sure to read over the information that has been previously emailed and also uploaded to the rowing page of Redlands Pulse.

Sailing

Last weekend, a group of Redlands sailors headed down to Canberra for the ACT team’s racing states regatta and the YMCA Canberra Sailing Club. We sailed extremely well, despite the rainy weather conditions. With light winds on both Saturday and Sunday, we sailed in conditions we aren’t particularly used to. However, our teams managed to come 5th and 8th in the schools’ division, with a total of 16 teams competing. Our teams worked well together to use our boat handling and strategic skills to try and cross the finish line in winning combinations. It has been such a rewarding and exciting experience for us, and we can’t wait for our Redlands Cup regatta, only a few weeks away.

Tennis

It was yet another rainy-day last Saturday, seeing all tennis fixtures for Round 3 cancelled.

This weekend brings Round 4 (5 March) and I hope that the rain starts to settle and the sun starts to shine so that all students can get back on the courts as soon as possible!

A reminder for Round 4 (5 March) this weekend:

  • If you are unable to attend Saturday competition, please email Luke Jeffery by no later than 12pm on Friday.
  • Please check the draw and playing pairs list to see when/where/who you are playing.
  • Students need to arrive at the venue at least 15 minutes before start time.
  • For any questions, please email Luke Jeffery.

Please join me in wishing the Tennis students all the best for their upcoming matches this weekend!

Fitness Centre

As we start to wind down our Summer Rep. Sport Season and with our Winter Sport athletes beginning their prep for the 2022 ISA Season, the Fitness Centre is the perfect place to build strength, work on speed and improve endurance. All students can access the morning sessions which run Monday–Friday and start promptly at 6.30am. We have had brilliant numbers across the sessions with over 35 students attending our Wednesday morning session this week.

In addition, starting from next week, the Fitness Centre will also be open to all students on Wednesday afternoon. This afternoon session will be targeted towards specific areas of development such as speed, power and flexibility. For all our Winter Rep. this Wednesday afternoon session is a fantastic way to prepare for the upcoming season. As well as the Wednesday Open Session, Monday will be a specific session for our 1st Boys Basketball. This session can also be accessed by specific athletes who have had prior permission from the Director of Athletic Development Mr Jack Gooding.

Students are reminded to bring with them the following.

  • A water bottle
  • Towel
  • Redlands PE / Sports Uniform

Sports and students are asked to contact the Director of Athletic Development Mr Jack Gooding jgooding@redlands.nsw.edu.au for any specific questions regarding these sessions.

Trainer of the Week

For this week our Redlands Trainer of the Week is none other than the legendary Maya Turton (Year 7). Maya has been like a duck to water in the Fitness Centre and both Luke and I could not be more impressed with her efforts so far. She has already moved past the introduction phase of the Centre and is now working through more complicated lifts and movements including Broomstick RDLs and her Push Ups are absolutely flawless. Cannot wait to see the level this young athlete can push herself towards.

Football

The 1st Boys Football team competed in the first round of the NSWCIS Cup on Tuesday 1 March against Shore 1st XI. The game got off to a great start and Redlands scored ta quick goal early in the first half to go up 1-0, shortly after Shore scored an equaliser making it 1-1 by half time. Despite the heavy rain in the second half the Redlands boys came out firing and proved that they are a team to be reckoned with season finishing the game with a 3-2 win and progressing to Round 2 of the CIS Cup.

Hockey

Please save the date for the next  Friends of Hockey meeting which will be held on Friday 11 March at 4pm. General Sport Information

Wet Weather

In the event that training is cancelled due to wet weather, a notification will be posted on the Redlands Sport Twitter page (@RedlandsSport) in addition, an email will be sent out to both students and parents. This includes morning & afternoon training along with weekend fixtures.

Thursday afternoon sport – wet weather arrangements (Year 8-12)
In order to limit student mixing indoors, Students in Year 8-12 who are dismissed at the end of Period 5 are required to go directly home. Sport coaches and Redlands staff will supervise their COVID-safe departure.

Thursday afternoon sport – wet weather arrangements (Year 7)
In the event that year 7 sport is cancelled on Thursday afternoon, students will remain at school until 3.10pm and participate in cohort-based activities.

Thursday afternoon – early departure (Year 8-12)
As we attempt to limit student mixing indoors, there will be no classroom supervision for students who do not have any scheduled sport training on a Thursday afternoon. Therefore, students who do not have training on Thursday afternoon will have permission to leave early.

Fixtures

A friendly reminder that the weekly Fixtures (The Redlands Rhino) can be found on the Secondary School Sport page on Redlands Pulse from Wednesday each week. Please ensure you check this on Friday each week to ensure you have the most up to date fixture information.

Uniform

The Redlands sports uniform should be worn to all trainings and matches (students are not permitted to wear any non-Redlands branded clothing). In the event of inclement weather students should wear their Redlands fleece or sports tracksuit.

Game time and arrival times

Students should arrive 30 minutes prior to the start of their scheduled fixture on Saturday (unless directed otherwise). Please ensure you know where you are playing and the likelihood of traffic on Saturday mornings to allow adequate time.

Attendance at Sport

Can we please draw your attention to the following communication process regarding absence from sport:

  1. Parents are required to send an email to the appropriate Sports administrator prior to missing any training session asking for them to be excused
  2. Any student unable to attend a Saturday fixture due to illness, is required to submit a Medical Certificate to their Sports administrator by the Monday morning following the missed fixture
  3. Injured students are required to attend all training sessions and Saturday fixtures
  4. Failure to do any of the above will jeopardise a student’s eligibility for Colours, Pockets, and Awards & result in school disciplinary action

Please note that the first unexplained absence will result in a lunchtime detention with further unexplained absences escalating to a Friday afternoon Detention. Please refer to the Student Planner 2022 for full details on requirements for participating in a Representative Sport.
