Greetings from Canberra
Last Friday I had an opportunity to meet with a few of our Redlanders currently studying in ANU. The plan was to organise a mini reunion which, due to COVID, scaled to a mini catch up attended by James Reid (School Captain 2020), Maya Auld and Jennifer Grant, all Redlanders 2020. It was a very lively discussion full of memories from Redlands, amongst highlights – camps, Winter School and of course teachers! Currently there are just over 60 Redlanders from a range of Year Groups who study in ANU across the faculties.
Book released by Jon Appleton (Redlander 1992)
Congratulations to Jon Appleton (Vice School Captain 1992) on the publication of his book ‘Letters from Robin’ which is a journey through the life and career of multi-award-winning Australian writer Robin Klein, author of more than 50 books for children of all ages.
During his time at Redlands, Jon launched and edited Rippa Reading, an authors’ fan magazine and review journal. Jon became a reviewer on TV and radio for a time and in 1991 was named a Young Achiever in the Australia Day awards. All this emerged from his correspondence and friendship with the author Robin Klein. His book will be available next week through Booktopia.
Postcard from Annabelle Swan (Redlander 2021)
Upon graduation Annabelle shared with us her memories and reflections from Redlands as well as her journey after school gates. Annabelle was awarded a Lucy Hill scholarship to join Redlands for Yr 11 and 12.
“These past few years have been some of the best of my life. Despite the busyness and pressure that come with general school life I’ve always loved coming to school and being involved in as many things as possible. I’ve made friends whom I absolutely love, I’ve loved learning, and I have a trail of unforgettable memories, participating in the Senior Musical Festivals, going on camp this year with my best friends – one of the most fun weeks of my life , trying to run a student Christian prayer group and realising how difficult leadership can be.
I am very grateful to have been offered 2 early entries to Sydney universities to study a Bachelor of Nursing. As I described in my scholarship application, it has always been my dream to go to Africa and help out, building hospitals and schools. Various contacts of my family have done incredible work with fistula patients, as well as helping to reduce the maternal and infant mortality rate, and I hope to join them as soon as possible.
I have utterly loved my time here at the school and am so grateful to you for allowing me to come and be a part of this special community. Thank you. I will never forget it.”
