PREP SCHOOL UPCOMING EVENTS

Reconciliation Week

National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. The dates are always the same each year: 27 May to 3 June. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey, the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision respectively. Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

In Prep this week and next week our students have been and will be participating in many learning experiences that speak to the heart of respectful relationships. Our Prep Gatherings last Thursday was a beautiful springboard into the week. Our One Blue class with Ms Cooper, read and interpreted ‘inding Our Heart by Thomas Mayor. Mr Webber was also able to speak about what what reconciliation meant to him and how Uluru was the spiritual home for many Aboriginal people. Throughout the other classes the students have been reading books that share Aboriginal stories, creating their own Welcome to Country statements and participating in authentic connections experiences to help them understand and appreciate the importance of Reconciliation.

Prep Parent Cyber Safety Webinar – 1 June

Redlands invites parents to register for the Prep Parent Cyber Safety Webinar.  We are excited to offer this webinar tailored for parents of students in both Redlands House and Prep years K-2. The session will be led by Yasmin London, from ySafe, a specialist in the field of cyber safety and social media education. Yasmin draws on research and her own experience in cyber law enforcement to explore what parents should know to support their children’s digital safety and wellbeing. The session offers practical advice, resources and tips for parents as they navigate their child’s first experiences in the digital environment. Registration for this event closes Monday 31 May at 8pm. Registered attendees will receive the Zoom webinar link and access on Tuesday 1 June.

Belinda Oxley Luncheon

I was delighted to join a large number of parents, Board Directors, alumni and other members of the Redlands Community at the Redlands Arts Luncheon yesterday. We celebrated the long history of the Creative Arts and 100 years of scholarships at Redlands and enjoyed hearing how alumni who have made their careers in the fields of Creative Arts and Design were inspired by their Redlands arts education. Most importantly, we had the opportunity to celebrate former Year 2 teacher and Dean of Early Childhood, Belinda Oxley, and her passion for our school, for education and for Visual Arts. Thanks to the generosity of the Redlands Community, over $40,000 was raised for the Belinda Oxley means-tested Scholarship, which will be awarded to a deserving student for Year 7 2023.
