Year 10

Student Achievement

Congratulations to Seb Griffiths for his selection in the NSW U18 Boys Hockey squad for 2022. Seb is one of the youngest players on the team which is a testament to his strong ability.

Congratulations to Eloise Trueman who played beautifully at the U18 Hockey State Championships earlier this week, and as a result, she has been selected into the Hockey NSW AAP Squad (U18 State Squad).

Welcome to our new French exchange student: Emma Terdjman

A warm welcome to French exchange student, Emma Terdjman, who started at Redlands this week. She is joining our fabulous Yr 10 year group on exchange from St Genevieve College in Paris until the end of the term.

National Reconciliation Week

This week is National Reconciliation Week. The dates for NRW remain the same each year: 27 May to 3 June. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey— the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision respectively.

To mark this important event Redlands will be hosting a Reconciliation Film Club at lunchtime on Level 4.10 of the Learning Hub. This is an opportunity to bring people together to develop a deeper understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives, histories and cultures, to ignite conversation and spark change. For further information, students can email here.

Paul Dillon: ‘Young people, alcohol and risk-taking: Looking after your mates’

Yr 10 had the opportunity to meet with Paul Dillon on Monday as part of his ‘Young people, alcohol and risk-taking: Looking after your mates’ presentation. It was pleasing to see Paul debunk some of the myths in this area, particularly around how to look after friends when an emergency presents due to risk-taking behaviour involving alcohol. It was alarming to see the increase in the prevalence rates of underage drinking and other illegal drugs consumed by secondary school students.

Yr 10 found the presentation really useful, particularly when it came to unpacking alcohol-related emergencies, including knowing when to call an ambulance and how technology can assist them with accessing emergency assistance. One of the key pieces of technology identified was the smartphone app – Emergency+. The Emergency+ app is a free app developed by Australia’s emergency services and their Government and industry partners. The app uses GPS functionality built into smartphones to help a Triple Zero caller provide critical location details required to mobilise emergency services. This app could be critical in an emergency if a student is unconscious due to being intoxicated by either alcohol or any other substance which will send an ambulance directly to the location of where the person is without the people involved having to read the coordinates of the location over the phone which can take some time to find and read out in an emergency. Parents are encouraged to talk with their child about the presentation.

Thank you
