Swimming Carnivals have a long tradition at Redlands, over 100 years!

In light of the upcoming Swimming Carnivals, we had a look into our Archives to see how this important part of sports education has evolved.

Redlands held Swimming Carnivals as early as 1920 at Spit and Balmoral Baths.

“Redlands Swimming Carnival was a great success; though we only had a small call we bravely entered the flag race, but only three members of the class swam” Redlander Magazine, August 1920.

Venues Redlands have traditionally held the annual Swimming Carnivals include: Balmoral Baths, Spit Baths, Olympic Pool North Sydney, Warringah Aquatic Centre and most recently, at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre.

Each year Redlands holds an annual Swimming Carnival, with finalists competing against other Independent School students at ISA (formally HICES). 

The most notable Redlander in Swimming is Gergaynia Shelley (Beckett, 1957), who competed in the Olympic Games in Melbourne 1956 and Rome 1960. Gergaynia was a regular volunteer in our Archives and documented prizes. She also attended our Sports Luncheon in 2019 and shared her experience. “It was very different in those days. I was by myself with no coach and no support.”

Scholarship Appeal Update

This year our fundraising efforts are to continue to support the means-tested Redlands Foundation Scholarship Fund and grant another scholarship which is to be named after Belinda Oxley, acknowledging her dedication to Redlands education. Further details will be shared later this term.

Applications for the Peter Lenox Scholarship commencing in Yr 7 2022 have just closed and we look forward to announcing a successful candidate later this year. For more information about this means-tested Scholarship Fund, please visit our website.
